Paul Bowen: Woodlark, and Fran Bull, SPACE, an odyssey

Paul Bowen sculpture fashioned from scavenged seaside material, and works on paper; and Fran Bull’s acrylic paintings inspired by cosmic imagery from the James Webb space telescope.

Paul Bowen

Paul Bowen has centered his life around the beaches of Provincetown. An inveterate beachcomber, he collects human commerce’s humble bits and remains, led by his curiosity and appreciation for the random objects forgotten and washed ashore. The artist combines and balances his weathered items into carefully realized sculptures, often to be mounted on a wall.

Fran Bull

At age 10, Fran Bull, wearing a beret as she sketched with her best friend in Greenwich Village cafés, knew she was an artist. She painted, sculpted, studied voice, and sang opera. After college, she planted her paintings in the Photorealist camp and enjoyed gallery representation in New York. Her paintings have become more personal and less representative, reflecting contemporary events and themes. “My abstract art has always borne a relationship to photographic images coming to us from Outer Space. The process whereby I make this work is the cause. Something about setting into motion paint of varying viscosities and colors is aligned with how gasses and stars interact in space.”

Artist Details

Paul Bowen

Paul Bowen, Williamsville, VT, grew up in Wales and lived and worked near the waterfront in Provincetown on Cape Cod for 30 years. He is interested in material with a history. His small-scale sculptures use simple carpentry and often appear to float across or torque away from the surface of the wall. His drawings and prints derive their imagery from his environment, and he has created his own inks from squid, Xerox toner, and walnuts.

Fran Bull

Fran Bull, a sculptor, printmaker, and painter from Brandon, VT, and Barcelona, Spain, says, "I am attracted to the realms where myth holds sway. I enjoy fusing images and/or ideas from the ancient past with icons of modernity. These unlikely juxtapositions of image, narrative, and time can spark new insights and inspire the art."
