Artist Talk: Hannah Morris

February 8 @ 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Artist Hannah Morris, whose images are currently featured on BMAC’s facade, discusses her methods and design systems for visual storytelling. She will also talk about her process of making collage underpaintings using images from lifestyle, craft, humor, and news magazines from the 1940s through the ’70s. Morris’s work interrogates the gender, race, and class norms portrayed in these magazines and grapples with the question of who is absent from them. After recontextualizing and rearranging her source materials into new, inclusive narratives, Morris flattens and distills the collaged scenes using paint. The resulting images appear off-kilter, awkward, fragmented, and ambiguous, inspiring the viewer to construct their own personal narratives. “By capturing a moment of action and interaction in a kind of frozen, surreal choreography,” Morris says, “I am exploring what it means to be interconnected in this fragile, impermanent human existence.”

This event is presented in connection with HANNAH MORRIS: MOVEABLE OBJECTS.
