A Literary Cocktail Hour to discuss ‘The Last Island’ | Entertainment

The Brattleboro Literary Festival is hosting an online conversation between Adam Goodheart and Tom Clynes, discussing Goodheart’s new book, “The Last Island.” The book tells the tale of North Sentinel Island, a remote location in the Indian Ocean inhabited by indigenous people who live in near-total isolation. Goodheart, a historian and author, recounts his own journey to the island as well as the stories of others who were drawn to its mystery over the centuries. The book chronicles the encounters between neighboring Andaman tribes and the outside world, revealing a dark saga of race, science, and empire.

Goodheart is the author of “The Last Island” and the director of Washington College’s Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience. Tom Clynes, the interviewer, is a photojournalist and author who has traveled the world covering the adventurous sides of science, the environment, and education. The event is scheduled for 5 p.m. and is free to join by registering at bit.ly/LitCocktail33. Clynes’ work has been featured in publications such as National Geographic, Nature, The New York Times, and Popular Science. He is the author of the books “Wild Planet” and “The Boy who Played With Fusion” and resides in Vermont.

The conversation will delve into the history and travel aspects of the book, providing insight into the mysteries of North Sentinel Island and the encounters between its inhabitants and outsiders. With a focus on the poignant work of history and travel, the event promises to be both informative and captivating. This is an opportunity to learn about a little-known place and the people who inhabit it, as well as the impact of outside exploration and colonization on their lives.
