Local History: Historical milestones of the Brattleboro Fire Department

BRATTLEBORO — Up until 1831, firefighting in Brattleboro was pretty much a neighborhood affair. The bucket brigade was the only organized attack. If a fire started, everybody within eye or earshot grabbed a pail or a kettle and started for the nearest water. Sometimes they won, but more often, valuable property was consumed by fierce flames.
