Discover Art Costa’s ‘Sounds Deep’ at BMAC, showcasing mystical deep-sea creatures in art. Join the talk on Dec. 14 for an immersive experience.
In this two-hour workshop, artist Michael Smoot invites participants to try their hand at relief printmaking. No prior experience is required. Two weeks before the workshop, each participant will submit a custom image or design, which will be laser-engraved onto a 5 in. x 8 in. block. Guided by Smoot, participants will use those blocks to print by hand, using a traditional etching press that will be temporarily installed in BMAC’s galleries.
Professor of the Practice in Print and Paper at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, Smoot completed Tamarind Institute’s Professional Printer Training Program in 2007. He has worked at numerous fine art print studios, including Atelier Towson, The Experimental Print Institute, Tamarind Institute, and Landfall Press. He has taught or given lectures and demonstrations at Towson University, Goucher College, East Carolina University, Southeast Missouri State University, Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, Georgia State University, Valdosta State University, UMass Amherst, Bennington College, Keene State College, and Smith College. He has also worked with numerous art-related community organizations, believing that printmaking can provide a way to build collaboration, negotiate difference, and inspire creative action.
This event is presented in connection with the exhibition MICHAEL SMOOT: AND TO THIS WORLD
