METROPOLIS w/ Pipe Organ Score by Peter Krasinski

October 26, 2023 @ 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Join us in our Sanctuary for an unforgettable experience! Fritz Lang’s 1927 Sci-fi Masterpiece with a live soundtrack performed on our historic Estey pipe organ by award-winning organist, Peter Krasinski!
Visually stunning and timelessly powerful, METROPOLIS dramatizes the conflict between wealthy über-capitalists and rebellious subterranean laborers—orchestrated by a diabolical scientist capable of destroying them both. This screening will feature the controversial Giorgio Moroder cut of the film.

Before Metropolis, organist Peter Krasinski will offer a special interactive presention focusing on photo plays (AKA Silent Films) that feature monsters, monstrous acts, or monstrous decisions made by characters – he will give a little history of each clip and accompany with improvised organ music to guide the audience to reflect on the decisions made in the film, and how the films potentially relate to our own decision making after we leave the theater in their own lives – do we behave like monsters? Peter’s masterclass style is very welcoming, friendly, and open to questions exploring the potential of the monsters within all of us, and how that relates to our lives long after the film is over, the organ is turned off and the house lights go up.

PETER EDWIN KRASINSKI is broadly recognized as a motivating consultant for the pipe organ community, and as a conductor, organist, and music educator, whose imaginative and energetic performances elevate and inform diverse audiences. Well respected in both the secular and sacred genres of his field, he has taught the enchantment of music to both public and private institutions in the greater Boston area for many years. His Bach interpretations have been hailed in print as “sublimely spiritual.” and his improvisations have been critically acclaimed in the press as “stunning,” “seamless,” and “brilliant.” His silent film performances have been called “a great marriage of movie and music.” He consistently receives rave reviews about his “compositions in real time.” “Krasinski’s musicianship and command of the organ were matched by his intuition and keen sense of dramatic sensitivity.” “It was remarkable and seamless, and yes—no modern movie could out do it… It was as if Krasinski became one with the elements.” “[Metropolis is] so intense and action-filled that, apart from an intermission, a player has scant opportunity to regroup between scenes. But Lang’s vivid imagery is packed with cues that Krasinski turned into recurring elements in an energetic score that drew on many of the Kotzschmar organ’s resources…an entertaining score worth repeating.”
