The Conference of the Birds
Directed by Eric Bass
Based on the poem by Farid ud-Din Attar
Stage version by Peter Brook and Jean-Claude Carriere
Conference of the Birds is a play adapted from a great 12th Century poem from Persia – the ancient land that is now the country of Iran. It has been part of the world’s mythology for nearly 1000 years. The performers, in Conference of the Birds work together as an ensemble (a collective group or company). Movement is important, individually and as a group. This movement is not dance. It is not choreographed by anyone outside the ensemble. It is the way a group of actors’ work together to create stage pictures that enhance the story they are telling. It is the way that all the actors work together to make the stage come alive and fill it with energy.
