Beginning Woodworking for Women+

NOV202026
10:00 AM – 5:00 PM
HatchSpace

Designed to empower and build community among diverse beginner woodworkers, this class is open to women, transgender, and non-binary people.

Get to know the key tools and techniques used in woodworking, learn how to work safely and with confidence, and start building skills you can use on future projects.

Learn. In this class, we start with the fundamentals of wood as a material. Wood is still very much alive, even after the tree is cut, and working with it means learning how it moves, reacts, and behaves over time. From there, you’ll learn to mill rough lumber – flattening, squaring, and sizing wood – and how to make mortise-and-tenon joinery. Along the way, you’ll get comfortable using a variety of machines and tools, including:

  • Jointer – flattens one face of a board
  • Planer – evens out board thickness
  • Table saw – makes clean, straight cuts
  • Festool Domino joiner – for making mortise-and-tenon joinery
  • Sanders – shape and smooth your final piece

We’ll also cover essential skills like reading wood grain, measuring and marking accurately, using clamps for a glue-up, and choosing from various finishes including milk paints.

Make. You’ll build a hardwood Shaker table, a perfect beginner project that incorporates all the basics.

Tool Safety Checks: This class will cover the safe operation of some of our major woodworking machines (table saw, miter saw, jointer, planer). To use these machines independently, you must be a member and pass our Tool Safety Check(s). For more information and to schedule a testing session, please contact info@hatchspace.org.
