Join artist Art Costa and curator Sarah Freeman for a conversation about Costa’s fantastical sculptures, which are inspired by life forms found in the deepest parts of the ocean. Costa will talk about his process of collecting and using found cardboard in combination with natural materials and paper mache.
Costa’s sculptures reflect his lifelong passion for repurposing objects and materials. He attributes that passion to growing up on a California dairy farm, where he made his own toys from whatever was available. Throughout his career, Costa has constructed works of art from free and cheap materials scavenged from thrift stores, yard sales, and construction sites. His work is influenced by the California Funk art movement of the 1970s and ’80s.
This event is presented in connection with ART COSTA: SOUNDS DEEP on view at BMAC through March 9, 2024.
