These fine wooden planes were made popular by the studio furniture maker James Krenov. The books Krenov wrote inspired a generation of furniture designers and makers and introduced the public to handcrafted furniture as functional art. The photos in his books showcase his beautifully designed furniture, and show Krenov making and using wooden planes, now known as Krenov-style planes. By the end of this course, you”ll know how these planes work and how to use them, plus you’ll take home a handcrafted tool you’ll be proud to use in your future woodworking projects.
Learn. In this course, students will gain a deep understanding of Krenov-style planes, including their function, geometry, and how to use them effectively. You’ll learn how to sharpen and adjust plane blades for optimal performance, and troubleshoot planing issues. You’ll also learn how to shape and customize a plane to suit your personal preferences, both in terms of comfort and aesthetics.
Make. Over the two days, you’ll build your own Krenov-style wooden plane. You’ll start by re-sawing the blanks, jointing and planing the body, cutting the blade ramp and escapement, and fitting the cross pin. On day two, you’ll flatten the sole, fit the wedge, and refine the throat. After sharpening the blade, you’ll put the plane together, make any final adjustments, and spend time practicing with your new tool.
