Zach Schuster, a musician and producer behind the electronic act Roost.World, expressed concern over the decline of outdoor music festivals in Vermont since he moved there in 2011. In response, he decided to create a new festival called Groundhog Fest, set to take place from January 31 to February 2, across multiple locations in Burlington. The festival will feature a diverse lineup of underground talent, including New York’s The Juan MacLean, Seattle’s Succubass, and local artists from the indie-rock and funk scenes. Schuster acknowledges the financial risks involved, but sees the festival as a form of resistance against the challenges of organizing cultural events today.
Groundhog Fest will kick off with performances at Muddy Waters and culminate with a late-night wrap party on Groundhog Day. A free ski/snowboard/skateboard rail jam will also be held in City Hall Park during the festival.
Additionally, the 18th annual Northern Roots Festival will occur in Brattleboro from January 24 to 26, featuring traditional folk music from European and Canadian cultures. The festival begins with performances from prominent French Canadian artists and concludes with a jam session, alongside various workshops on fiddling and Québécois music.
Moreover, Italian singer-songwriter Peppe Voltarelli will perform in Brattleboro on January 24 as part of his international tour promoting his latest album. Supported by violinist Luca Ciarla, Voltarelli has gained recognition in the folk music scene.
Lastly, a recent concert by progressive fusion band Sungazer at Nectar’s in Burlington showcased their unique blend of intricate musicality and audience engagement, spotlighting the local music scene’s vibrant energy.
