Vermont Music News: A New ‘Burlington Does Burlington’ Compilation

Burlington singer-songwriter Sean Hood has launched a new music project titled Burlington Does Burlington: A Compilation, aimed at revitalizing the local music scene. This album features 27 Vermont artists covering each other’s songs, capturing a diverse array of genres. Notable collaborations include Eric George covering the Wormdogs and Lily Sickles covering Missy Bly. This project echoes a similar initiative from 1996, where local zine Good Citizen released a two-volume compilation with 38 bands, showcasing the vibrant music culture in Burlington.

Hood was inspired to revisit this idea amidst recent challenges for the local music community, such as the closures of venues like Nectar’s and Despacito. He stated, "We need that sort of connection again," emphasizing the importance of community support. The album is available for purchase on Eastern Mountain Time’s Bandcamp, with all proceeds benefiting the People’s Kitchen mutual aid nonprofit.

In addition to Hood’s compilation, the local music scene is buzzing with upcoming events beyond jazz, including the Vermont Yazz Fest, which celebrates ambient and experimental music and will be held on August 30, 2025. The West Windsor Vermont Music Festival, featuring classical performances, will take place from June 27 to 29, showcasing talents like violinist Amadi Azikiwe. Furthermore, the Maple Roots Festival returns on July 26, promoting grassroots music and providing a platform for local musicians.

In another note, The District VT, formerly known as ArtsRiot, has closed its doors, highlighting the struggles faced by local venues. The announcement reflected the challenging landscape for artists and venues alike, signaling a loss for the creative community in Burlington.
