Stuck in Vermont: Visiting the Kellogg-Hubbard Library’s PoemCity in Montpelier During the Month of April | Stuck in Vermont | Seven Days

April is National Poetry Month and Montpelier becomes PoemCity for the entire month, featuring 450 poems displayed in the windows of 50 downtown businesses. Organized by the Kellogg-Hubbard Library, the event includes poets of all ages, with 200 students and representation from 75 towns. There are also 35 community events and poetry readings scheduled throughout the month. In a recent episode of “Stuck in Vermont,” senior multimedia producer Eva Sollberger visited PoemCity with Michelle Singer from the Kellogg-Hubbard Library and poets Scudder Parker and Samantha Kolber. The event holds special significance for Montpelier residents, who experienced catastrophic flooding last July. The library’s basement was underwater, resulting in the loss of 10,000 donated books and damage to essential systems. Despite the challenges, the library is open and operational, using art as a way to work through the community’s shared experiences. Poems featured in PoemCity cover a range of topics, including the floods, love, animals, pastries, and Vermont culture. An anthology of the 2024 works is available for purchase in bookstores across the state. The episode of “Stuck in Vermont” was supported by New England Federal Credit Union and featured the music of The Westerlies.
