Soundbites: Five Seconds Expired Reissue Early Catalog

In 2003, the author experienced a punk rock milestone while attending a hardcore showcase at the now-closed Higher Ground in Winooski, Vermont. The band My Revenge was ejected from the venue for defying stage dive rules, establishing a rebellious atmosphere. Soon after, Five Seconds Expired took the stage, delivering an intense performance that blended hardcore and metal. Vocalist Jeff Howlett’s commanding presence resonated with the crowd, many of whom had a nostalgic connection to the band, previously known as Slush.

Five Seconds Expired, a prominent figure in the Burlington metal scene since their formation in 1993, disbanded shortly after this performance. However, they made headlines again recently by releasing a remastered compilation album titled “The Slush Years,” which includes their debut and EP. Howlett emphasized that the remastering began as a simple personal project by drummer Gary Williams, but evolved into a live reunion event due to the quality of the remastered music.

The band practiced for their reunion show after years apart, with Howlett admitting he had to work hard to regain his vocal abilities. The rehearsal proved successful, and the group announced it would simultaneously release a special double album featuring a live set recorded at Burlington’s Box studio.

Howlett cautioned fans that while they may perform again, this reunion is likely a one-off event, adding an air of excitement and nostalgia for those eager to witness their live show. The mix of old and new energy promises a memorable experience, underscored by the author’s hopeful anticipation of an audience member reliving the punk spirit by getting kicked out of the venue.
