Robert Resnik, DJ, Musician, and Writer, Passes Away at 72

Robert Resnik, a cherished figure in Vermont’s music scene, passed away on July 21 at the age of 72, according to a family announcement. Known for his battle with health issues like Parkinson’s disease, Resnik was a dynamic force in shaping the Vermont folk music landscape. He began his influential journey as a DJ at WRUV 90.1 FM at the University of Vermont in 1970 and later hosted his acclaimed show, “All the Traditions,” on Vermont Public since 1996.

His passion as a DJ was notable; he frequently broke free from corporate programming norms, embracing a diverse range of music. Resnik’s enthusiasm for folk music turned it into an evolving journey rather than a static genre. In 2023, he was honored with an induction into the Folk Alliance International Folk DJ Hall of Fame, a recognition that delighted him, particularly as it coincided with a trip to one of his favorite barbecue spots in Kansas City. Additionally, he received the Herb Lockwood Prize in the Arts in 2019, acknowledging his significant contributions to the musical community in Vermont.

Beyond his musical endeavors, Resnik had a substantial career at Burlington’s Fletcher Free Library, where he worked for nearly 30 years, including a position as co-director. Despite his commitments, he performed regularly across various platforms and authored a book titled Legendary Locals of Burlington in 2013. Resnik often reflected on his father’s approach to work, emphasizing the importance of pursuing one’s passion—music was always central to his life. His legacy as a pioneering musician and advocate for folk music will undoubtedly endure in Vermont’s rich cultural history.
