On the Beat: New Vermont Music and the Return of the Tiny Desk Contest

Vermont’s music scene is buzzing with new releases, highlighted by singles from local artists just ahead of upcoming album launches. Burlington singer-songwriter Lily Seabird has unveiled two new tracks, "How far away" and "It was like you were coming to wake us back up," both part of her forthcoming album, Trash Mountain, set for release on April 4. These songs showcase a more minimalistic sound compared to her previous indie-rock style, with "How far away" featuring her ethereal voice accompanied only by piano. The second track explores themes of loss and memory, drawing on Seabird’s experience of seeing a deceased loved one.

Another Burlington artist, Ian Steinberg, is teasing his upcoming LP, The Bleeding Days, with the single "Wake Me Up," releasing a new video on March 7. This song delves into psych-folk territory, incorporating themes of loss and isolation, further evolving his musical style.

Additionally, Claud Six and producer Wool See from Portland, Oregon, have launched the weekly Greenlit Series, exploring modern societal issues through hip-hop. Their latest installment, "Episode 04: Always Accessible," critiques the overwhelming nature of digital notifications and corporate promises.

On another note, NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest has returned, with many Vermont musicians participating, including Devon McGarry, the Wormdogs, and Ryan Montbleau. This contest offers a chance for the winner to perform at the Tiny Desk and receive industry mentorship.

Finally, an event called "Story Tellers" at the Vermont Comedy Club captured the community’s spirit, blending live music with storytelling to benefit local families. The performances ranged in emotion, reflecting the talent and diversity present in Vermont’s vibrant music scene.
