On the Beat: Montpelier Singer-Songwriter Mark LeGrand Passes Away

Mark LeGrand, a Montpelier singer-songwriter and country musician, passed away on April 8, 2023, at the age of 72 after a two-year battle with stomach cancer. Known for his outlaw country style, LeGrand drew inspiration from icons like Waylon Jennings and candidly shared his struggles with alcoholism, notably in his 2006 album, “Cold New England Town.” He was a staple in the local music scene and frequently performed with partner Sarah Munro at various venues. A benefit was held last year to support LeGrand’s recovery from surgery. Musician Dave Keller paid tribute, highlighting LeGrand’s rich life experiences and profound musical wisdom.

In other music news, Burlington pianist and singer-songwriter Tyler Mast recently released a new single titled “Patterns of Our Lives.” This upbeat track features a retro-psychedelic vibe, filled with horns and organ, reminiscent of George Harrison and Jerry Garcia. The song’s theme revolves around a woman influenced by a voice in her head, which shapes her choices and life patterns. It is currently streaming on major platforms.

Additionally, Seven Days is hosting the annual “Daysies,” encouraging Vermonters to nominate their favorite local artists and venues. This initiative often sparks passion and debate among the music community regarding the nominees. Emphasizing engagement, the article calls for music fans to actively participate to ensure a true reflection of Vermont’s vibrant music scene, which includes diverse genres such as hip-hop, bluegrass, and cover bands. Fans are urged to participate by nominating their favorites before the voting deadline on April 28 at ballot.sevendaysvt.com.
