On August 26, the Champlain Valley Fair in Essex Junction will host an attempt to set the record for the largest square dance, led by guitarist Bob Wagner and featuring local artists like Phish bassist Mike Gordon. The event, termed the “Honky Tonk Hoedown,” aims to gather over 1,600 participants, the current record, while raising funds for the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont (NOFA-VT). This nonprofit, severely impacted by cuts from the Trump administration, focuses on promoting sustainable agriculture. Wagner, alongside the WaterWheel Foundation and Ben & Jerry’s, hopes the event will provide crucial support to NOFA-VT.
Additionally, Kommuna Lux, a Ukrainian folk group known for their energetic blend of traditional music, will perform in Vermont as part of their American tour. Despite the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, they continue to raise funds for hospitals treating frontline injuries through their nonprofit, KMLX. Their tour includes performances in St. Johnsbury on August 29 and Waterbury Center on August 30.
Another highlight is the “What Doth Rumble” festival returning next month in White River Junction. Curated by the indie label What Doth Life, this festival features 34 acts across three stages, showcasing Vermont’s underground indie-rock scene along with talent from neighboring states. Scheduled for September 13-14, the festival is free and open to the public, offering workshops on audio engineering and animation, along with various vendors.
