Matt Lorenz of the Suitcase Junket is Embracing Every Emotion

Matt Lorenz, performing as the Suitcase Junket, has a unique talent for transforming broken, discarded items into musical instruments. Growing up in Cavendish, Vermont, he began playing piano at age five and later expanded to guitar, saxophone, and violin. His stage performances embody a “one-man band” ethos, producing rich, layered sounds akin to a β€œjunkyard symphony.”

In 2020, Lorenz released his album “The End Is New,” which features a polished sound thanks to producer Steve Berlin from Los Lobos, marking a significant shift in his musical style. However, the pandemic hindered his touring plans. Compounding his challenges, Lorenz faced personal tragedy with the unexpected death of his sister Kate, who was also his bandmate in Rusty Belle, in 2022.

Reflecting on his experiences, Lorenz shares that the last few years have been tumultuous, filled with both joy from raising his young children and grief from loss. He expresses the necessity of songwriting as a form of catharsis, particularly as he navigates the complexities of grief after Kate’s passing. Lorenz has composed two new records: one upbeat and dance-focused, and the other introspective, capturing his deeper emotions.

During his tour, he plans to perform new material, embracing the emotional connection to his sister through music, even allowing himself moments of vulnerability on stage. While he acknowledges the challenges of writing politically charged music, he feels a responsibility to address societal issues, particularly in the current political climate. Lorenz aims to release the introspective record first, highlighting the therapeutic power of music to guide listeners through difficult feelings toward growth and renewal.
