Burlington’s music scene is buzzing with the vibrant sounds of Sonido Mal Maiz, led by the dynamic Maiz Vargas Sandoval. Though the band hasn’t played locally as much lately—80% of their gigs now happen out of state—their impact is undeniable. Sandoval, originally from Costa Rica, has been on a mission to reignite the local scene, especially after the closure of beloved venues like ArtsRiot and Nectar’s.
This September, Sandoval is curating some exciting events in Burlington. He’ll headline the RIVEN Studio Block Party during the South End Art Hop on September 5 and 6, featuring a stellar lineup that includes local favorites and vibrant Latin sounds. Later, on September 20, he’s co-hosting the Latin American Connection Block Party at City Hall Park, which will showcase local Latin talent and revive the long-dormant Latin Heritage Festival.
Beyond just supporting the local music scene, Sandoval’s heart is set on celebrating Latin culture amid a challenging political climate. He believes strongly in the power of music as medicine and channels that belief into his upcoming album, Mama Abuela, which features his evolution from traditional Latin folk to psychedelic rock sounds. The album’s first single will debut at the Art Hop, marking a decade of performances with his band.
With a mission to celebrate and inspire, Sandoval and Sonido Mal Maiz promise to make their return to Burlington memorable and meaningful. Don’t miss their performances this September—it’s a celebration of community and culture that’s sure to resonate!
