Greg Freeman Looks Ahead in New Album ‘Burnover’

Greg Freeman, a Burlington-based indie-rock singer-songwriter, captures everyday moments and reconfigures them into profound narratives. Known for his observational songwriting style, he draws inspiration from the world around him, exemplified in his new album, Burnover, set to release in August. Freeman describes the songwriting process as an almost constant endeavor, suggesting that interesting phrases and ideas are abundant in daily interactions.

Following his well-received 2022 debut, I Looked Out, Freeman gained recognition as a rising indie troubadour, reminiscent of artists like MJ Lenderman and Jason Molina. His music blends mid-American indie rock with dark folk and country influences, positioning his sound as a contemporary neo-American-gothic aesthetic.

With Burnover, Freeman has evolved his craft and collaborated extensively within Vermont’s music scene, enlisting friends and local talent to elevate his work. Four singles have already been released, and he plans a tour in Europe followed by support for California’s Grandaddy in the U.S.

While contemplating his future in the Vermont scene, Freeman recently spent time in New Mexico to gain new perspectives. He grapples with the limitations of staying in a small town as an artist but remains connected to Vermont as his home. His music reflects a sense of mortality and the inevitability of endings, showcased in lyrics that ponder life’s ephemeral nature.

Freeman laments the fragility of the Burlington music scene, underscoring its lack of structural support compared to other cities. Nevertheless, he’s optimistic about the diverse musical community and the unique paths its artists are forging. As Burnover prepares to release, Freeman remains eager to embrace what lies ahead, balancing his roots with aspirations of reaching a wider audience.
