This September, the Burlington waterfront will reverberate with fresh musical energy as Grace Potter takes the stage with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. Potter, a prominent figure in Vermont’s music scene, is transforming her Grand Point North festival into a vibrant showcase of local talent, emphasizing female-led acts and innovative collaborations.
Starting September 12, the festival promises an exciting lineup featuring indie-rock groups like Melt and Ista, alongside local favorites such as singer-songwriter Grace Palmer and punk bands like Slob Drop and the Burly Girlies. Potter’s enthusiasm is palpable; she’s eager to highlight the unique voices that contribute to Vermont’s cultural tapestry.
But it’s her partnership with the VSO that’s generating particular buzz. Potter remembers being captivated by the orchestra during her childhood, and she’s now ready to merge rock with classical for an unforgettable experience. This collaboration began with a conversation with VSO’s Matt LaRocca about reimagining her songs, and together, they’ve selected and rearranged tracks, blending the rawness of rock with the orchestral depth.
Potter describes the collaboration as akin to “rewilding a field,” where the music blossoms into something new and exciting. The festival, strategically tied to her newly established Grand Point Foundation, aims not only to celebrate music but also to enrich arts and culture throughout Vermont.
With this bold reinvention of Grand Point North, Potter is ushering in a new era for Vermont’s music scene while reminding us all of the extraordinary talent that thrives here. As music fills the air, it’s hard not to ask, “Why would you want to be anywhere else?”
