PUTNEY, VT – Next Stage Arts invites music lovers to a captivating evening with Kanun player and composer Firas Zreik on Saturday, January 25, at 7:30 PM. Known for his innovative approach to the Arabic Maqam tradition, Zreik will perform a concert of original compositions that blend the classical roots of Maqam with global influences, as well as traditional Arabic selections that showcase the mesmerizing Kanun.

The Artist: Firas Zreik

Firas Zreik is redefining the global perception of the Kanun, a Mediterranean harp that plays a central role in the Arabic Maqam tradition. Born in Palestine and now based in New York, Zreik bridges cultural and musical worlds, using the Maqam’s improvisational spirit as a foundation for unbounded creative exploration. His mastery of microtonal soundscapes allows him to evoke deep emotional resonance, taking listeners on a transformative journey.

In live performances, Zreik’s music creates a tapestry of moods, blending fragile introspection with intricate, dynamic melodies. His artistry has taken him to prestigious venues, intimate clubs, and international festivals, where he continues to expand the possibilities of the Kanun.

About the Arabic Maqam Tradition

Maqam is the modal system of traditional Arabic music, emphasizing improvisation and emotional expression. In Zreik’s hands, the Kanun becomes a vessel for blending this ancient tradition with contemporary global influences, creating a sound that is both timeless and innovative.
