Eye on the Scene: The Wet Ones! Live at Original Skiff

On March 7, The Wet Ones!, an instrumental surf-rock trio from Starksboro, marked the debut of live music at the Hotel Champlain’s bar and restaurant, Original Skiff. This performance not only introduced the venue to live bands but also solidified The Wet Ones! as the first act to perform there. Their unique sound reverberated throughout the hotel lobby, ensuring that even non-attendees could catch a glimpse of their energetic performance.

Guitarist John Flanagan and bassist Amy Wild brought authenticity to the band’s surf-rock aesthetic, each using iconic Fender equipment. Flanagan showcased his Ocean Turquoise Jazzmaster guitar paired with a 1960s Silverface Bandmaster amplifier, while Wild played an Olympic White Mustang bass augmented by a Fender Bassman 100 stack. Bobby Hackney Jr. completed the trio on drums, as they delivered two sets of vibrant tunes that encapsulated the essence of surf music.

As guests savored cocktails served in whimsical fish-shaped glasses, the atmosphere was infused with a Southern California vibe, providing a delightful escape from the chill of winter outside. Overall, The Wet Ones! delivered an engaging performance that not only entertained but also set a lively tone for future musical events at the hotel. Their combination of authentic surf sound and engaging stage presence left a lasting impression on the inaugural night of live music at the Original Skiff.
