On May 27, Burlington’s own Rose Asteroid, a “AlternaFunk Space Rock” trio, showcased their talent in Waterfront Park, capitalizing on the DIY music scene as local venues continue to close. The band, consisting of Marcus Bretto on guitar, Mats Thureson on bass, and Aidan Marble on drums, performed energetically in an open field near the FRAME and Andy A_Dog Williams Skatepark. The day was perfect, with a vibrant atmosphere as skaters, cyclists, and sunbathers enjoyed the waterfront.
Rose Asteroid’s positive instrumental music resonated with the diverse crowd, including skaters and casual visitors, while even receiving praise from Parks, Recreation & Waterfront staff passing by. Despite their creativity and success, the band faced practical challenges with equipment; they operated with portable batteries and large amplifiers, which led to a practical suggestion for future performances: to leave high-wattage tube amps at home to preserve battery life.
The performance symbolizes a larger trend within Burlington’s music community, highlighting the innovative spirit of local artists adapting to changing circumstances. As venues diminish, bands like Rose Asteroid embody the resilience of the DIY ethos, bringing music directly to the people in outdoor spaces, and fostering a sense of connection among community members. This grassroots approach not only keeps music alive in the city but also enhances the vibrancy of the local culture.
