Eye on the Scene: Madaila, Middlebury Festival the Green

Madaila performed at the Middlebury Festival on the Green on July 18, featuring lead vocalist Mark Daly, whose captivating stage presence kept the audience engaged. After the original band disbanded in 2018, Daly continued under the Madaila name before reassembling a new lineup last year. The current members include seasoned Vermont musicians: Jer Coons (lead vocals, guitar), Zane Gundersen (synth), Ben Lively (fiddle), Josh Weinstein (bass), Steve Hadeka (drums), and Capt. Tony Naples (pedal steel).

Madaila headlined the festival after the folk group Buffalo Rose, which posed a challenge given Buffalo Rose’s charm. There were initial concerns regarding the volume of Madaila’s performance, as it may overwhelm the laid-back crowd. However, the band adeptly adjusted their sound, proving they could rock the 46th edition of this beloved hometown festival.

Overall, the event showcased Madaila’s musical talent and adaptability. Their performance was well-received, demonstrating their ability to connect with the audience while honoring the festival’s relaxed atmosphere. The evening was a celebration of local music, combining engaging performance with a rich community spirit.
