Make a wooden serving tray to hold six beautiful clay tiles of your own design. This class is offered together with Brattleboro’s community clay studio, Wheelhouse Clay Center!
Session 1 at Wheelhouse (July 8): You’ll learn to use Wheelhouse’s slab roller, and to size and cut tiles allowing for shrinkage. Then you’ll work with your teacher on your own unique design for your tiles, choosing from among several techniques offered. Wheelhouse will supply the clay and all tools you’ll need.
Sessions 2/3 at HatchSpace (July 15/16): You’ll start by learning the safe use of the miter saw and table saw, how to cut precision angles using a specialty jig, and how to glue up your tray. Day Two will allow for sanding and finishing.
Session 4 at Wheelhouse (July 22): You’ll be introduced to applying of glazes and underglazes, and you’ll have coaching to finalize your design and prepare the tiles for the kiln. Once you finish this project, you will qualify to use Wheelhouse for future tile projects using day passes.
Each student will make six glazed clay tiles, and a hardwood serving tray. Tiles fit snuggly in the tray but are removable and can be used as trivets.
