NAKED LUNCH w/ Music by Sheri Hupfer & Mark Schwaber

EXTERMINATE ALL RATIONAL THOUGHT! Enjoy David Cronenberg’s cerebral and grotesque, body-horror adaptation of William S. Burroughs’s celebrated 1959 nonlinear novel- historic for being the last piece of literature prosecuted for obscenity in the United States. OUR RETRO-FUTURISM NOIR SERIES FINALE!

NAKED LUNCH (1991, 115 mins, Dir. David Cronenberg). MATURE AUDIENCES ONLY, PLEASE.

Leave logic at the door and embrace our insect overlords in one of the most hallucinatory films ever made! This singular cinematic oddity sprang from the minds of one of the great poets of the 20th century and one of the great filmmakers – and undoubtedly a huge amount of mind-altering substances! In this adaptation of William S. Burroughs’s hallucinatory, once-thought-unfilmable novel Naked Lunch, Bill Lee (Peter Weller, aka Robocop) is an exterminator with a penchant for ingesting pesticides. While hallucinating, Bill begins to take orders from a giant beetle that commands him to kill his wife and flee into the Interzone. There, he meets his wife’s doppelgänger, and his typewriter morphs into a cockroach and begins to produce the book that the film is based upon. And that’s just the start of this surrealist masterpiece’s convoluted and mind-bending premise. Alternately humorous and grotesque—and always surreal—the film mingles aspects of Burroughs’s novel with incidents from the writer’s own life, resulting in an evocative paranoid fantasy and a self-reflexive investigation into the mysteries of the creative process.

Revenant Sea is the collaborative ambient/folk-jazz project of Mark Schwaber and Sheri Hupfer, combining haunting melodies and deeply textured arrangements. The project captures introspective, atmospheric soundscapes—mixing intimate folk lyricism with subtle jazz infusions and field recordings. Currently stemming from the Brattleboro//Greenfield area,
Revenant Sea draws organically from its creators’ chemistry and shared influences.

Mark Schwaber is a seasoned indie musician and producer with deep roots in experimental songwriting and collaboration. As a multi-disciplinary artist, Sheri Hupfer works in many mediums; from the instrument of the body, textiles, and rusty metal, to arranging objects in her interior design work, sound is always at the foundation. It is the attention to how sound moves in space, how objects placed can bend or alter it. Sheri is most invested in how place informs the music, using voice to translate memory and emotion, recognizing that much of the sound is not heard but felt.
