Moondog on the Keys: A Night of Piano and Vocal Works by American Composer Moondog
Join us for an extraordinary night celebrating the life and music of Moondog, the maverick American composer who fused counterpoint with jazz, Native American rhythms, and minimalist aesthetics. This special event at Epsilon Spires features performances by Julian Calv, Moondog’s “grand-student” and a trimba specialist, pianist Alex Stewart, and vocalist/percussionist Sarah Penna.
The program spans Moondog’s career, showcasing compositions that weave together influences from the Arapaho, Navajo, Blackfoot, and Sioux traditions with classical minimalism. Julian, who studied under Moondog’s only student, Stefan Lakatos, will introduce each piece, sharing insights into Moondog’s unique approach to music and his influence on modern composers like Steve Reich, who called Moondog the “Grandfather of Minimalism.”
