Intro to Wood Inlay with Sharon Mehrman
Discover the art of wood inlay, a technique for setting contrasting wood veneers into a surface to create decorative designs and patterns. In this introductory class, instructor Sharon Mehrman will show you the basic methods used to add beautiful detail to furniture, boxes, and other woodworking projects.
Learn. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll explore the tools, materials, and methods essential to successful inlay work. You’ll learn how to:
- Read wood grain
- Prepare veneer material for successful cutting and handling
- Transfer patterns
- Cut and fit veneer pieces with precision
- Cut and prepare recesses in solid wood to receive veneer
- Adhere veneer cleanly into your recesses
- Level the surfaces of your work
You’ll practice safe and effective use of hand tools such as X-acto knives, bench chisels, and compasses, as well as small routers for removing background material. Sharon will also cover tips for filling gaps, sanding, and finishing inlay surfaces to achieve crisp, professional results.
Make. You’ll create a small decorative panel inlaid with a complex design using a variety of hardwood veneers. Explore using colors and grain patterns to highlight aspects in your designs for this and future inlay projects.

Friday, Saturday & Sunday | 10am to 5pm | Class will break for a 1/2 hour lunch each day.
