Looking for a unique summer camp experience for your child? This is it: Kids build their own skateboards at HatchSpace and Brattleboro’s First Proof Press in the mornings, then head over to the Boys & Girls Club of Brattleboro to skate all afternoon. A rad maker project and physical activity, for grades 6-12. Partial and full scholarships are available.
HatchSpace and First Proof Press (mornings): Students will carve a mold out of foam blanks, then learn how to sort and glue up seven layers of maple veneer. Veneer and foam “stacks” are then laminated overnight using a vacuum press bag. Next, students cut, shape and sand their decks using a bandsaw and power sanders, decorate their boards with custom artwork, attaching wheel sets as the final step.
Boys & Girls Club of Brattleboro (afternoons): With ramps and rails ready to ride, the Boys & Girls Club Indoor Skate Park may be the area’s best kept secret for kids. Safety pads, helmets and extra skateboards are provided for five afternoons of straight-up fun.
