Intro to Woodworking: Level 1: Cutting Board

Whether you’re completely new to woodworking or just looking to brush up on the basics, this hands-on class is a great place to start. You’ll get to know the key tools and techniques used in woodworking, learn how to work safely and with confidence, and start building skills you can use on future projects.

Learn. In this class, we start with the fundamentals of wood as a material. Wood is still very much alive, even after the tree is cut, and working with it means learning how it moves, reacts, and behaves over time. From there, you’ll learn to mill rough lumber – flattening, squaring, and sizing wood. Along the way, you’ll get comfortable using a variety of machines and tools, including:

  • Miter Saw – makes crosscuts and angled cuts
  • Jointer – flattens one face of a board
  • Planer – evens out board thickness
  • Table saw – makes clean, straight cuts
  • Bandsaw – useful for curved or irregular cuts
  • Sanders – shape and smooth your final piece

We’ll also cover essential skills like reading wood grain, recognizing and correcting distortions that develop as logs are sawn into boards, measuring and marking accurately, and choosing the right finish.

Make. You’ll build a hardwood cutting board, a perfect beginner project that incorporates all the basics.

Saturday, March 7  |  10am to 5pm  |  Class will break for a 1/2 hour lunch.

Cost: $195 non-members; $165.75 members (plus an additional $20 materials fee.)
