Intro to Woodworking: Hand Tools Bootcamp
Learn to tune and use a wide range of woodworking hand tools in this 3-day, bootcamp-style class. You’ll make a cutting board entirely by hand – no electricity needed, just elbow grease! Be prepared to discover muscles you never thought you had! All levels of experience – Beginner to Advanced woodworkers – are welcome.
Learn. The course will begin with tuning and sharpening, then cover the basic uses of woodworking’s foundational hand tools, from multiple kinds of planes to chisels, saws, marking gauges, measuring tools, and more. You’ll then take a rough-from-sawmill board and make it flat, straight, square, and smooth, finally adding four inset feet for a useful and beautiful cutting board.
What to Bring: It is highly recommended* that you bring your own tools from the following list, to learn to tune and use them:
– Any of these planes (or all 3): jointer plane (#7); smoothing plane (#4); block plane. Note: shoulder and rabbet planes are not substitutes for these planes.
– 1/4 in. chisel and a 3/8 in. or 1/2 in. chisel. Other sizes are welcome, but less ideal.
– 12 in. combination square
– carpenter’s saw and/or backsaw
– marking gauge
– card or flat scraper
* HatchSpace will also have the above hand tools and more to share!
Make. Each participant will make a cutting board crafted from local, rough-sawn hardwood.
