Intro to Woodworking: Box Making

This class introduces woodworking through a classic project: a box. Boxes are a great place to start because once you understand how to make one, the same skills translate easily to many other woodworking projects, from drawers and cabinets to small furniture.

Learn. On the first day, you’ll start by learning how to mill lumber, the process of flattening, squaring, and sizing boards accurately, a critical first step in any woodworking project. You’ll learn the safe operation of the miter saw, jointer, planer, and table saw, along with how to read wood grain and prepare parts for assembly. From there, you’ll move into joinery, cutting box joints and dado joints to attach the sides and bottom, and complete a proper glue-up with attention to alignment, clamping, and cleanup.

The second day focuses on refining and finishing your box. You’ll create the handles using the router and drill press, then move on to sanding and finishing techniques.

Make. Using solid cherry hardwood, you’ll build a clean, well-made box that brings together milling and joinery skills. You’ll go home with a finished piece and a strong foundation in woodworking basics.
