Intro to Relief Carving
This introductory class is taught by Lita Judge, an accomplished illustrator and wood carver with a long love of handwork and traditional tools. Lita believes that carving becomes far less intimidating once you understand how wood behaves and how to remove material thoughtfully. By using sharp tools, the right techniques, and working a little at a time, students discover the quiet joy and natural flow of carving, and realize it’s more approachable than it first appears.

Learn. Students will learn the fundamentals of relief carving, beginning with how to safely hold and control carving gouges and how to read the direction of the wood grain. The class covers transferring a design onto wood, establishing depth, and gradually shaping forms by removing background material. Throughout the process, emphasis is placed on patience, precision, and letting sharp tools do the work. Students will also be introduced to basic tool care and sharpening so they can continue carving with confidence.
Make. Each student will complete a carved wooden board designed as a simple wall hanging, featuring a floral or patterned motif.
