Artist Residency Concert: Phaidros String Quartet

Artist Residency Concert: Phaidros String Quartet

The first performance in Marlboro Music’s 2025-26 artist residency series spotlights the newly-formed Phaidros String Quartet. Now in its second season, Marlboro Music’s artist residency program brings exceptional emerging chamber music ensembles to the Marlboro campus throughout the year for deep creative work and concert offerings. Each group is in residence for 1 to 3 weeks, enjoying concentrated time together in a retreat-like environment where they can rehearse new programming, prepare for recording projects, develop community engagement programming, and more. Every ensemble in residence includes at least one Marlboro Music artist, and each residency culminates with a free informal concert, in which the groups share the results of their work with our local community. Our first 2025-26 residency concert features the Phaidros String Quartet, consisting of Marlboro Music participants Stephanie Zyzak, Claire Bourg, and Zhanbo Zheng, and cellist Leland Ko. Their performance takes place on Sunday, November 9 at 2 pm. Admission is free. Reservations are required. Please note: so that we can accommodate additional audience, this performance has been moved to the Marlboro Dining Hall (from Ragle Hall). Seating is unreserved (first come, first served). Program Haydn: Quartet in A Major, Op. 20, No. 6 Kurtág: Officium breve in memoriam Andreae Szervánszky, Op. 28 Beethoven: Quartet in F Major, Op. 59, No. 1 The Phaidros Quartet is the junction of four unique, sensitive, and sincere individuals, founded not just out of love for the genre, but out of a devotion to something deeply human that exists just as much as an experience shared between people as it does as notes encoded on a page. Though the quartet’s journey began in the fall of 2024 in New York City, its members developed friendships over the course of a decade as classmates and colleagues at various schools and summer festivals. As a young quartet, they are using their Marlboro residency as a period of intensive rehearsal, developing their sound and point of view and the concert program we will hear on November 9. The group takes its name from Plato’s “Phaedrus,” which is a dialogue between Socrates and Phaedrus (romanized: Phaidros), and covers subjects ranging from love and friendship to rhetoric and the human soul. Phaedrus also serves as a central symbolic figure in Robert Pirsig’s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, as a means of discussing the tension between the classical (rational) and romantic (emotional) minds. Phaidros String Quartet members Stephanie Zyzak, violin; Claire Bourg, violin; Zhanbo Zheng, viola; and Leland Ko, cello.

Big Woods Voices 10th Anniversary Concert

Big Woods Voices 10th Anniversary Concert in Brattleboro VT

Come celebrate with us at our 10th Anniversary Concert on Sunday, November 9th at 3:00 at the Brattleboro Music Center, followed by a reception in the lobby. All are welcome. After ten years of singing together, we feel we’ve hit the sweet spot of clarity, blend, balance, and fun. We invite you to join us on November 9th for this extra-special anniversary concert featuring our individual and collective favorite pieces of all time, from time-tested to brand-new! Big Woods Voices (Becky Graber, Will Danforth, Alan Blood, and Amanda Witman) have been singing together since Fall 2015. We share a love of a cappella harmony, a common delight in embracing musical challenges, and a deep desire to share our joy in music with others. We celebrate a cappella vocal harmony through arrangements grown from American roots genres, world folk styles, poetry old and new, and Will Danforth’s instincts as an arranger and composer. From heart-moving to foot-grooving, prayerful to fun-filled, dissonant to dulcet, Big Woods Voices brings the spirit of poetry and music to life through rich harmonies and soulful interpretations. If you have accessibility needs, please notify us in advance so we can make the necessary arrangements. Questions can be sent to bigwoodsvoices@gmail.com. Heather Mae and Olivia Nied at Stage 33 Live

Heather Mae and Olivia Nied at Stage 33 Live

BELLOWS FALLS — Heather Mae is an evocative bliss-mongering rabble rouser… a genre-defying artist-activist fusing the storytelling depth of folk, the grit of alternative rock, and the infectious hooks of indie pop to craft anthems for the outsiders, the survivors, and the seekers of radical joy. She’s built a devoted fanbase through her unapologetic vulnerability and electrifying stage presence. Her live shows are a blend of musical prowess and theatrical storytelling laced with humor, moxie, and gut-punching truth — participatory, vulnerable, and fiercely alive. Her music is an unflinching mirror reflecting the raw realities of queer liberation, survivor empowerment, mental health, and the fight for justice… the pain of unlearning, the fire of self-discovery, and the freedom of living with whole-hearted authenticity. Love letters to the misfits, effervescent affirmations for the weary, and dauntless refusal to be erased. She isn’t just writing songs — she’s writing revolutions. Rocky Mountain Folk Fest Winner. Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Finalist. John Lennon Songwriting Contest Finalist. Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Emerging Artist Finalist. Folk Alliance International Official Showcase Artist. Northeast Regional Folk Alliance Artist-Activist of the Year. Has performed and worked with Allison Russel. Sistastrings. The John Prine Foundation. Holly Near. Cheryl Wheeler. John Gorka. Tom Paxton. Crys Matthews. Planned Parenthood. INDIVISIBLE Tennessee. Rocky Mountain Song School. The Trevor Project. Tennessee-based Heather Mae will be appearing at Stage 33 Live fresh off the co-bill tours with Flamy Grant and Crys Matthews. “Mae is a standout” — POPDUST Olivia Nied shares the bill with songs that are both thoughtfully poignant and unabashedly celebratory, from tender acoustic to sizzling electric, reflecting her unique experience as a transgender, neurodivergent under-30 pursuing radical joy against all odds. Trained at Hampshire College, Goldsmiths University of London, Berklee College of Music, and the Vermont Jazz Center, Olivia is an innovative composer, arranger, and producer who can play just about any instrument there is. Her professional music career began at age thirteen when she was invited to perform at the Ukulele Festival of Great Britain. At age sixteen, she performed in clubs in Paris and later in cafes in Holland. She has since performed across the US as a solo artist and session player as well as with various groups and ensembles exploring rock, indie-pop, new-grass, and jazz. When not recording or performing, Olivia utilizes music in her work with autistic and neurodiverse young people. Heather Mae and Olivia Nied will play a 6:00 PM concert at Stage 33 Live at 33 Bridge Street in Bellows Falls, Vermont, on November 9, 2025. Tickets are discounted to $20 in advance at stage33live.com or $25 at the door, as available. Advance tickets guarantee entry. Only 40 tickets will be sold. Presented in association with Bellows Falls Pride. Stage 33 Live is a casual, intimate industrial-rustic listening room in a former factory, hosting local, regional, and national performances and presentations of original material. No bar or kitchen; the stage is the mission. Coffee, soda/juice/water, and weird snacks available by donation. More information about the nonprofit, all-volunteer project, and this and other upcoming events, online at stage33live.com Stage 33 Live gratefully acknowledges the help of so many individuals without whom none of this would have been possible to happen, and institutional support this season from The Island Corporation, WOOL-FM, Guilford Sound, and the Rockingham Arts & Museum Project to help fund improvements and maintenance, and generally smooth out a lot of the rough edges. Stage 33 Live is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and all donations are deductible to the fullest extent. Volunteers run the thing from stem to stern.

Harmonic Mindfulness Soundbath with Jacob Rudin

Join us for a relaxing and immersive experience with Jacob Rudin’s Harmonic Mindfulness Soundbath! Experience deep relaxation and emotional healing through The Harmonic Mindfulness Soundbath, a musically guided meditation created by Jacob. This practice is designed to support introspection, self-discovery, and inner peace. The session begins with a brief meditation on a spiritual text, drawing inspiration from Buddhist wisdom and other traditions, grounding participants into both the room’s sounds and the sounds within themselves. Jacob then guides the experience with an original, pre-recorded soundscape of electronic and natural sounds, over which he plays wind instruments, gently leading attendees into deeper states of awareness and reflection. This is a high-intention, melodically guided spiritual practice, not a typical bowl-and-gong soundbath. It is designed to soothe, center, and open participants, supporting each person on their own unique journey inward. — Jacob began creating healing music in 2019, learning to make music through code and experimenting with electronically generated soundscapes. In 2020, he expanded his practice to include live wind instruments alongside binaural beats and field recordings, giving birth to the Tranquility Studies series. The frequencies used in his backing tracks target low Alpha and high Theta brainwaves (8–10 Hz)—states associated with deep relaxation, reflection, and spiritual flow. Typically, he plays 4-10 instruments throughout the course of a Soundhealing–flutes, saxophone, synthesizers, healing bowls, Melodicas, harmonicas and many others. Who should attend: Anyone seeking profound relaxation, mindfulness, or a unique musical meditation experience. Learn more about Jacob: https://www.nthnlsound.com/soundbath

NXT Rockumentary Film Series Elvis Thats The Way It Is 1970

NXT Rockumentary Film Series: Elvis: That’s the Way It Is (1970)

Denis Sanders, 1h 32m Like his 1968 comeback special, this record of the preparations for Elvis Presley’s first tour in 13 years is a tale of two Elvises. There’s the cocky country boy, whose studio performances with his crack band tap the primal energy of his best performances; and the stage entertainer, swaddled in foot-long fringe and buttressed by a small army of backing singers. (At one point, he jokes to the Vegas crowd that he’s filming a movie called “Elvis Loses His Excess.”) The 2001 recut strips away footage of fans to provide more of the King in his domain. – Rolling Stone Co-presented with Next Chapter Records.
