A Music Editor Suggests Five Family-Friendly Summer Shows

Vermont offers a vibrant lineup of outdoor concerts during the summer, providing families with an enjoyable and economical way to appreciate music together. These events often allow children free entry or family rates, fostering a love for music that can inspire them to learn instruments themselves.

Chris Farnsworth, music editor at Seven Days, reflects on how attending concerts as a child shaped his musical journey, highlighting the transformative power of live performances. He has compiled a list of notable outdoor shows perfect for families.

One standout event is the Brattleboro Gallery Walk, taking place monthly from June to September. This free block party features music, food, and art, closing Elliot Street to traffic and transforming it into a lively space, with the All Night Boogie Band performing on June 6.

Another intriguing event is the Summer Kick-Off Party & Shweebee Social on June 12 at the Essex Experience, where families can try out a new lawn game and enjoy live music from the band The Grift.

The Ben & Jerry’s Concerts on the Green, running from June 23 to September 4 at the Shelburne Museum, offers a mix of well-known artists like Waxahatchee and Ani DiFranco. Tickets can be pricey for adults, but children under 12 can attend for free, and food trucks add to the festive atmosphere.

Additionally, the Deerfield Valley Blueberry Festival (July 25 – August 3) features free live music and other attractions like barnyard shows, while the Maple Roots Festival on July 26 includes kids’ activities and local food vendors, rounding out a summer filled with musical experiences for families.
