When Sunny Lowdown takes the stage, it’s not just a concert—it’s a blues revival. With decades steeped in tradition and a slide guitar style that cuts straight to the soul, Sunny’s upcoming performance at Thrush Hill Stage on October 4th promises to be a standout night in southern Vermont’s music scene.
A true bluesman in the classic sense, Sunny Lowdown has built a career on groove, grit, and an unwavering respect for the music’s deep roots. At just sixteen, he played his first professional gig backing none other than John Lee Hooker, setting the tone for a life immersed in the blues. His journey since then has led him to share stages with giants like Hubert Sumlin (Howlin’ Wolf’s guitarist), Pinetop Perkins (Muddy Waters’ pianist), Otis Rush, George “Wild Child” Butler, and more.
Sunny’s sound is distinctive—slow-burning, hypnotic, and emotionally raw. Whether on electric or acoustic guitar, he doesn’t rush the music. Instead, he lets it breathe, simmer, and build until it washes over the room in waves. His 2018 album Down Loaded earned a Blues Blast Music Award nomination, and in 2019 he represented Vermont at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis after winning the Vermont Blues Society’s challenge.
According to Blues Matters Magazine, “Lowdown has become a blues artist with his own identity… puts his own stamp so firmly all over this. This is the genius of a guy who has blues running through his veins.”
“Sunny has a vibe that’s raw, hypnotic, and steeped in tradition. He brings the kind of soul-stirring sound that warms you from the inside out—perfect for a crisp autumn evening.” ~ Jesse Lepkoff, host of Thrush Hill Stage
With fall in full swing and the foliage doing its thing, it’s the perfect time to grab a blanket, pour something warm, and settle into the field for a night of powerful, rootsy music under the stars.
