This summer, Burlington’s music scene has been buzzing with a nostalgic yet fresh twist as Sean Hood of Eastern Mountain Time has revived a local tradition with a new compilation of bands covering each other’s work. Titled Burlington Does Burlington, this album features 20 tracks from an array of local artists, showcasing the vibrant creativity of the Queen City.
Andrew X Smith, frontman of the iconic ’90s band Chin Ho!, ignited this idea nearly three decades ago with his own compilation released under Good Citizen. While Hood may not have consulted Smith before launching the new project, both musicians are thrilled about this homage to Burlington’s rich musical legacy.
The lineup in the new compilation is impressive, boasting names like Robber Robber, Paper Castles, and Wren Kitz, who represent the current generation of talent. Music editors Chris Farnsworth and Dan Bolles took a trip down memory lane, comparing the original ’90s comp with today’s collection, noting how the nostalgia for the past enhances appreciation for the present.
Both agree that while the ’90s scene had legendary acts like Phish and James Kochalka Superstar, today’s crop potentially rivals that talent, with newcomers like Cricket Blue turning heads locally. Interestingly, this new album appears to take a step away from the jam-centric vibe that once defined Burlington, opting instead for a more indie and folk-centric lineup.
Available exclusively on Bandcamp until August 30, all proceeds benefit the People’s Kitchen, ensuring that this musical treasure not only captures the essence of local talent but also supports a worthy cause. If you’re a fan of Vermont music, this is one collection you won’t want to miss!
