Album Review: Wojcicki’s “Wetmarket Scratch”
Vermont’s indie-rock outfit Wojcicki, formed in 2011 by singer-songwriter Matt Sharff, emerges from a vibrant local music scene. The band, based in Brattleboro and consisting of Sharff, guitarist Bethanie Yeakle, and drummer Phil Beninson, has previously released two albums: “After Birther” (2016) and “Failure to Illuminate” (2022). Their latest effort, “Wetmarket Scratch,” reflects an engaging mix of heartfelt roots-rock and emotionally charged lyricism.
The six-track EP opens with “Holding the Bag,” marked by a tense guitar riff that culminates in a cathartic chorus. Sharff’s vocals, infused with passion, draw comparisons to Johnossi’s John Engelbert and the late David Thomas from Pere Ubu. Notable tracks include “Transmission Love,” which features anthemic lyrics addressing loss and resilience, hinting at deeper political themes while prioritizing emotional expression over overt protest.
Yeakle enhances the band’s sound with her vocal harmony on “Anhedonia” and impressive guitar solos, adding a distinct flavor reminiscent of her solo work in “The Space Between.” The band recorded “Wetmarket Scratch” at Guilford Sound under producer Dave Snyder, known for producing artists like the Pixies. This collaboration ensures a polished, dynamic sound that balances raw energy with meticulous production.
“Wetmarket Scratch” is available for streaming on major platforms and vinyl through wojcicki.bandcamp.com. The band is set to showcase their work on Burlington’s “Rocket Shop” radio show on July 30, highlighting their growing presence in the indie music landscape.
