Lars Hasselblad Torres to Lead AVA Gallery and Art Center

Lars Hasselblad Torres has been appointed the new executive director of the AVA Gallery and Art Center in Lebanon, N.H., a role he began on June 3. Previously a prominent figure in Vermont’s creative sector, he served as the executive director of the state’s Office of the Creative Economy, directed Generator maker space, and worked at HatchSpace, a community woodworking workshop.

Hasselblad Torres had initially applied for the AVA position in 2021 but was not selected. His persistence, familiarity with AVA, and commitment to supporting creative, affordable spaces for artists ultimately led to his appointment. He views AVA’s campus as embodying his goals as an arts promoter and emphasizes that the center’s role extends beyond exhibitions, featuring educational programs and affordable studio spaces for artists.

The AVA center includes various facilities, such as the Sculptural Studies Building, which provides access to essential tools for artists. Hasselblad Torres highlighted their mission to nurture creativity across all ages. While the main gallery exhibits are planned a year in advance, the more flexible spaces allow for shorter-term displays, fostering emerging artists and hobbyists.

Under Hasselblad Torres’ leadership, the goal is to stabilize the center after years of leadership changes. He has expressed interest in initiatives such as a residency program and expanding storage facilities. With a rich 50-year history, he aims to connect with new audiences and adapt to changing times, particularly as arts funding faces challenges. A welcome reception for Hasselblad Torres is set for June 20, inviting community engagement as he begins his new role.
