The pamphlet fold is an inventive book structure that folds up from a single sheet of paper without sewing or gluing. The pamphlet fold and its variations are favored by book artists because it is easily replicated and lends itself to narrative storytelling, text, and zines. This two day workshop will take participants from an idea to an original handmade book. On the first day participants will follow step-by-step instructions to make several different models of the pamphlet fold. We’ll end the day with a few creative drawing & writing exercises and an introduction to storyboards & dummy books. On the second day participants will choose a pamphlet book structure and will work independently to create an original artist’s book, with help from the instructor as needed. Participants can use drawing, painting, collage, writing, stamping, or a combination to create their books.
No prior book arts experience needed, but students must be comfortable with drawing or image-making.
