Stuck in Vermont: Hannah Miller Visits the Haskell Free Library & Opera House in Derby Line, Vt., and Stanstead, Québec | Stuck in Vermont | Seven Days

Hannah Miller, an associate professor at Vermont State University-Johnson, spent her sabbatical knitting, reading, and writing in public libraries in Vermont. One unique library she visited was the Haskell Free Library & Opera House, located in Derby Line, Vt., and Stanstead, Québec, straddling the international border between the United States and Canada. The building is divided by a thick black line marking the border, allowing visitors to be in two countries at once.

Vermont has more libraries per capita than any other state, with 187, showing the state’s love for libraries. Miller, along with her wife and Seven Days senior multimedia producer Eva Sollberger, visited the Haskell Free Library for their “Stuck in Vermont” series. The trio wore colorful hand-knit sweaters and brought their knitting along. Miller documented the visit on her Instagram page, with this being her 22nd stop at a Vermont public library and her first time crossing the border without a passport.

The unique setting of the Haskell Free Library provided a memorable experience for Miller and her companions, showcasing the beauty and charm of Vermont’s public libraries. Through her social media posts and adventures, Miller highlights the quirks and charm of each library she visits, sharing her love for literature and craft with her followers. This episode of “Stuck in Vermont” was supported by New England Federal Credit Union, showcasing the importance of community support for creative endeavors.
