Film on ‘land sculpture’ artist to be screened for free at 118 Elliot | Entertainment

The Architecture + Design monthly film series will be showing “Levitated Mass,” a documentary exploring the work of artist Michael Heizer and his monumental land sculptures. The film will be shown on Nov. 15 at 118 Elliot in Brattleboro and will be followed by a discussion led by Danny Lichtenfeld, director of the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center. The film is also available for free virtual screening on the same day through the adfilmseries.org website. “Levitated Mass” focuses on Heizer’s two-story tall, 340-ton granite boulder, which was moved to the LA County Museum of Art, attracting international attention as it traveled through 22 cities on a massive trailer. The film weaves together Heizer’s story, the ambitions of the museum, and the public’s reactions to his art. The director, Doug Pray, is known for his work on mavericks and misunderstood communities. The Architecture + Design Film Series aims to stimulate conversation about the impact of design and beauty in daily life. The live screenings take place in Burlington and Brattleboro and are also available for virtual screening. The series is hosted by Brattleboro-based architect Jim Williams and cosponsored by the American Institute of Architects Vermont Chapter and local businesses and organizations like BMAC and the River Gallery School of Art. 118 Elliot, where the series is hosted, is a modern, fully accessible arts and educational center in downtown Brattleboro.
