Artist Michael Smoot Leads Printmaking Workshop at BMAC

Artist Michael Smoot, a professor in the Department of Print and Paper at the School of Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University in Boston, Mass., leads a printmaking workshop at the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center (BMAC) on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m.

Admission to the workshop is $35 for the general public and $20 for BMAC members. Space is limited, so registration is required. To register, visit brattleboromuseum.org or call 802-257-0124 x101.

About the Printmaking Workshop

The printmaking workshop invites aspiring printmakers of any skill level (no experience required) to experiment with creating their own printing design. Two weeks before the workshop, each participant will submit their custom image, which will be laser-engraved onto a 5 in. x 8 in. block. During the workshop, Smoot will guide participants to print their blocks by hand, using a traditional etching press that he will temporarily install at BMAC.

The Printmaking Workshop is presented in conjunction with Smoot’s exhibit at BMAC, “And to This World,” which opened Oct. 14. In his prints, Smoot combines traditional printmaking techniques with contemporary digital tools to create forms that evoke evolution, geological shifts, and other biological and chemical processes. Smoot completed Tamarind Institute’s Professional Printer Training Program in 2007. In addition to teaching, has worked at numerous fine art print studios, including Atelier Towson, The Experimental Print Institute, Tamarind Institute, and Landfall Press. He has also worked with art-related community organizations to use printmaking as a tool for building collaboration, negotiating differences, and inspiring creative action.
