Rocky Horror Picture Show Time Warps Into Bellows Falls

“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is more than just a film; it has become a cultural phenomenon since its release in 1975. Initially met with poor reviews and box office failure, it gained a cult following through midnight screenings, rapidly evolving into the longest-running film release in cinema history. Known for celebrating sexual liberation, gender ambiguity, and LGBTQ identity, its unique audience participation transforms viewings into theatrical events where attendees dress up, throw props, and shout lines in sync with the movie.

On November 2, the professional shadow-cast troupe “Ones From the Vaults,” based in Brattleboro, will perform at the Bellows Falls Opera House for a Día de los Muertos show. The troupe, whose name references a line from the film, seeks to embody the spirit of nonconformity and counterculture that “Rocky Horror” represents. Founded by Stephanie Abrams, a circus artist, the group has already gained popularity with sold-out shows at Brattleboro’s Latchis Theatre.

The evening will kick off at 10 p.m. with a pre-show featuring comedy, vaudeville, and burlesque acts, along with an introduction to audience participation, including traditional “callbacks.” While participation is voluntary, it is strongly encouraged, with fun, lighthearted interactions such as shouting catchphrases whenever key characters appear.

To enhance the audience experience, the troupe sells prop kits containing various items for iconic scenes and organizes a “Rocky virgin sacrifice game” for first-timers. Ultimately, Abrams hopes attendees feel immersed in a vibrant, alternative world that awaits them at the theater, encouraging creativity and self-expression among all who participate.
