On the Beat: New Music From Phish and a Family Folk Affair in Grafton

Living in the area where jam-band giants Phish originated has led to an increase in locals in their forties and fifties taking trips to Las Vegas, possibly due to TSA confiscations of THC edibles. Phish recently wrapped up a four-show residency in Vegas and released a new single called “Evolve.” The band’s new full-length LP, also titled Evolve, is set to be released on July 12 along with news of a summer tour.

A double bill featuring two families deeply rooted in folk music tradition will take place in Grafton on May 4. Noted music journalist John Lomax III will perform classics in his “Lomax on Lomax” show, while the Speckers, a famous folk family, will open the show with a performance featuring fiddle legend John Specker and his daughters.

Photographer Luke Awtry highlights a performance by surf band The High Breaks at Jay Peak Pump House Indoor Waterpark. The spontaneous decision to attend the show turned out to be a fun 420-themed water park adventure, with the band’s sound carrying across the park amidst the rush of water from the slides.

Additionally, a Spotify playlist of Vermont jams is available for listening, and a Doomsubury comic by Farnsworth and Slayton is featured in the content.
