New film on painter Mary Cassatt featured at 118 Elliot | Community-news

The Architecture and Design monthly film series in Brattleboro will be showing Mary Cassatt: Painting the Modern Woman (2023, Ali Ray, English, 90 min) at 118 Elliot Street. The doors open at 6 p.m., and the screening begins at 6:30 p.m. with a brief discussion to follow led by local architect James Williams. The film is also available for same-day, 24-hour viewing on the A+D homepage at ADFilmSeries.org. Mary Cassatt, an often-overlooked Impressionist, focused on painting the real women around her, representing a major shift in the way women appeared in art. The film showcases her prints, pastels, and paintings, while also delving into the contradictions of Cassatt herself. Director Ali Ray, known for her work on Frida Kahlo, helmed the film. The series is hosted by the American Institute of Architects, Vermont, and explores our relationship to beauty and design. For the full season lineup, visit the Films pages at ADFilmSeries.org.
