In Stowe, Outdoor Sculpture Show ‘Exposed’ Encourages Exploration

The Current’s summer opening celebration in Stowe features an engaging outdoor sculpture show titled “Exposed,” showcasing a range of artworks, including the playful “Ernest and Ruth” by Hank Willis Thomas—an 8-foot-wide thought bubble that invites interaction and is a hit on social media. Among the subtle pieces is Chakaia Booker’s “Filtered Thoughts,” an innovative 8.5-foot structure made from worn NASCAR tires, which evokes both human and architectural qualities with its eye-shaped portal and cascading rubber whorls.

New York-based Don Porcaro’s “Talisman 18” combines hand-formed stone discs to create a figure reminiscent of ancient amphorae, while Oren Pinhassi’s sculptures blur the lines between human form and architecture. His work “Reception” encourages viewers to engage with its bronze window, questioning boundaries between inside and outside.

Jonathan Prince’s “Mother Earth,” crafted from Cor-Ten steel, symbolizes a connection to nature and creativity, resembling a vertical slice of the Green Mountains. Chris Curtis’ “Thought Cage,” a 7-foot granite-and-steel column, embodies the hope of escaping ideological confines through a smooth-surfaced portal.

Vermont artists Justin Kenney and Clark Derbes present notable works along the Stowe Recreation Path. Kenney’s imposing “Cacophony Winds” juxtaposes delicate and massive elements, while Derbes’ “Lil’ Family” consists of three carved cedar pillars, harmoniously integrated with their surroundings, reflecting the charm of tramp art. This diverse exhibition offers a blend of playful and thought-provoking artworks, appealing to a wide range of visitors.
