After focusing on oil painting for many years, Lydia has recently been working almost exclusively with walnut ink. The medium is simple, yet demanding, requiring a degree of patience and persistence that needed some nurturing in her art making practice. This body of work reflects gathering and observing things that grow around her home in Townshend, Vermont (as well as other things that don’t). The ink, made from mashed-up black walnuts, sometimes feels like a magical potion; it keeps revealing itself.
She also work with still life, abstract forms, and experiments with whatever comes to hand. Although her artwork takes many different forms, it all is concerned with ‘finding’. Each foray begins in the unknown and struggles toward the light.
In her teaching at River Gallery School, she tries to support each artist’s journey toward self-expression. She’s grateful for the opportunity to work with people exploring their creativity in an environment that resonates with her core beliefs.
She has had solo and group shows in New England and has work in many private collections.
